OUR HISTORY

The United Way of Southington has  long history of offering financial assistance to those Southington residents facing obstacles in providing for basic survival needs. This initiative has been in place since 1926. At that time, the organization was called the Southington Community Chest. The organization continued operations until 1972 when it became the United Way of Southington. For nearly 100 years, this Southington 501(c)(3) has met the many challenges facing Southington residents and the organization itself for continued existence.

One of the more noteworthy, modern accomplishments by the United Way of Southington, was the establishment of a partnership with the Main Street Community Foundation to fund a local transportation program. As a result of the lack of public transit in our town, we have been able to allow our senior Southington residents to attend doctors’ appointments, visit loved ones, pick up prescription medication, shop, and more. In addition, annually we continue to support fellow 501(c)(3) entities that offer services to our residents in health, education and income. The target local population includes those Southington individuals and families needing assistance to meet basic survival needs. Some of the local establishments granted program funds from United Way of Southington over the years are Southington Community Services, Southington Bread for Life, Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA, Margaret C. Griffin Child Development Center, Prudence Crandall Center, Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut, Senior Transportation Services, SoCCA, LEAF, YWCA Sexual Assault Services, and Child Guidance Clinic of Central CT.

The year 2026 will mark 100 years in providing financial assistance for the Southington Community. Without our dedicated residents who partner with us, none of this would be possible. Please prepare to participate as always, and witness a thankful and momentous celebration of OUR United Way of Southington in the year 2026. Plans are underway to stage an event to further our organization in our motto of “Southington People Helping Southington People”.
