Who We Are

Unitedway_Whoweare.jpegABOUT THE UNITED WAY OF SOUTHINGTON

The United Way of Southington is a community-based organization working together to better the lives of all our neighbors.  Our mission is to building lasting, positive change in Southington by inspiring generosity to address critical needs that improve lives through community impact.  All money raised assists Southington residents only.

The United Way of Southington is a 501 (c) (3) local non-profit organization managed by a very small staff and supported by a volunteer Board of Directors and hundreds of volunteers each year. By utilizing the time and talent of people from all walks of life, the United Way of Southington is able to invest in multiple agencies each year – providing general community wide services in the areas of health, education and financial stability that range from infants to the elderly.

Moreover, the United Way of Southington is fully committed to funding services that concentrate on the local Southington ALICE population.  Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed … ALICE are those Southington families and individuals who are working yet are barely or not able to afford the basic necessities of life. In 2021, 29% of Southington households met the ALICE threshold, while 25% did not qualify for federal safety net assistance programs. The United Way of Southington is concerned about these neighbors falling through the cracks, and we are fully committed to supporting this segment of the Southington population.

Our work makes a difference. Lives change when a community cares.

"… AT UNITED WAY OF SOUTHINGTON, WE ENDEAVOR TO IDENTIFY THE OPPORTUNITY GAPS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND INSPIRE CARING, COLLECTIVE ACTION SO THAT TOGETHER, WE CAN MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL SOUTHINGTON RESIDENTS."

ALICE

Today the world, our economy and employment are very different than just a decade ago.  With these changes a new and growing population has emerged across the nation, and right here in Southington.  We call this population ALICE: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are our friends, co-workers and neighbors who work, yet often struggle to pay for basic necessities, including housing, food, childcare, health care, and transportation.  Often living paycheck-to-paycheck, ALICE often doesn’t qualify for governmental aid or social service programs, so they are virtually invisible to the system.  The United Way of Southington unites together to support ALICE.  Learn more about the ALICE research here.

Who We Fund

Each year, the United Way of Southington provides funding for programs and organizations that strive to fulfill our mission of Southington People Helping Southington People. These organizations represent the best of the best in terms of their goals, who they help, and the ways in which they provide support. It is a broad range of organizations covering everything from access to healthcare for seniors and access to early childhood education for families, to literacy and domestic violence support, to food security — and many others in between. We utilize a strict reporting process to vet the agencies' financial management and monitor progress of the charities we support, ensuring your funds benefit the needs of Southington citizens only in an efficient and effective manner.  Please click here for a list of United Way of Southington current year funding recipients.
